Parent Governor Role

Dear Parent/Carer

Election of Parent Governor

I am writing to invite you to consider standing for election as a parent governor on the Local Governing Body for Rushden Academy or to nominate another parent to do so. We currently have a vacancy for 1 parent governor.

The Tove Learning Trust Board of Trustees, together with the Principal of Rushden Academy, has overall responsibility for the running of the Academy.  The Board of Trustees delegates certain powers and functions to the Local Governing Body.  These are set out in the Trust’s Scheme of Delegation and Terms of Reference which are available to view on the Tove Learning Trust website.

As a parent governor, you will work with the board to make sure it effectively carries out the duties required to run the Academy. You will also play a vital role in bringing a parental perspective to the governing board, but you are not there to speak ‘on behalf’ of the parent body.

To be a parent governor you should have:

  • A strong commitment to the role and to improving outcomes for children
  • Good inter-personal skills, curiosity, and a willingness to learn and develop new skills

The governing body works together as a group, meeting at least once a term. If you are thinking of standing as a governor, remember that you will need to attend a minimum of three meetings a year, plus committee meetings during the term.

As a governor, you will normally hold office for a period of four years, even if your child leaves the school during this time. You can, however, resign from the governing body at any time.

No special qualifications are needed and the most important thing is to have a keen interest in the Academy and be prepared to play an active part in the local governing body’s work.  Training is available for all local governors and the Board of Trustees has an expectation that those new to being a local governing body member, attend free induction training. A Job Description outlining the role is attached to this letter.

The attached sheet summarises the circumstances under which someone cannot serve as a local governor. Nominations must be from parents, or individuals, exercising parental responsibility of a child at the Academy.

If you would like to stand for election or nominate another parent, please complete the attached nomination form and either:

  1. Place in an envelope and give this to the Reception Team at Rushden Academy, for the attention of Mrs D Pilcher.
  2. Send your completed application form, via email, to:

Please note: if you are nominating a parent you must obtain their consent prior to their nomination.

You may also include a short personal statement to support your nomination, which should be no longer than 250 words.  The statement should only include biographical information, your reasons for wanting to be a parent governor and the contribution you believe you can make to the local governing body.

If there are more nominations than vacancies the election will be by secret ballot.  If that is necessary, voting papers will be sent to all parents together with details of the ballot procedure.

I do hope you will consider standing as a governor yourself or nominating someone else. If you would like more information about being a governor please let me know.

Yours faithfully

Mr Tim Foster

Chair of Governors

Message from the Principal 15.11.2024

Dear Parent / Carer

This week has been another very busy week for Team Rushden and there have been so many occasions where every student has done the school and the community proud!

On Monday, we held our remembrance service, joined by local veterans and members of the Royal British Legion, to remember those who have lost their lives in conflict. I was joined by Rex who helped plan and deliver the service as part of his Rushden STARR Gold Award, and our head students who delivered poignant poems. We were incredibly proud of the respect shown by all during the service.

We are also incredibly proud of our year 11 students who have conducted themselves brilliantly this week as they completed their mock examinations. Students have been respectful and they have worked hard throughout all of their exams. It is a demanding week for students as they complete a large suite of exams in a short space of time. Exams will continue into next week and we look forward to sharing their results at the end of the half term.

As you are all aware, we launched our push on uniform this week and we are grateful for all the support we have received from parents ensuring students are wearing the correct uniform for school. Students are all looking incredibly smart, and I have received lots of feedback from staff and students who have noticed the significant improvement in standards this week. We will continue to support families moving forwards with any uniform they may need. If you need any support with uniform, please do get in touch with the school office and we will be more than happy to help.

Sixth form students from 12JK have started to support our younger students with their reading as part of our Reading Buddies programme. This support is designed to help students develop their love of reading and to build their confidence when reading to others. This strategy is one of many different strands that we are implementing into our curriculum to support reading across the school. Over the course of the year, all sixth formers will have the opportunity to support the Reading Buddies programme.

Assemblies this week have focused on Anti-Bullying in support of Anti-Bullying week. The theme for this year’s campaign is ‘Choose Respect’. Directors of Key Stage led the assemblies, sharing a clear definition of bullying and clear examples of what bullying looks like. Information was also shared with students on how to report concerns to members of staff so that we can tackle any issues immediately. For more information on Anti-Bullying week, please visit the Anti-Bullying alliance website using the link here.

Finally, each year we strive to improve our mental health provision. Our Mental Health lead at Rushden Academy, Mrs Ogilvie, has kindly asked for you to complete the following survey linked below. This will support our strategy to support mental health.

Thank you all for your continued support and I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

Your sincerely

Message From the Principal 08.11.2024

Dear Parent / Carer

I hope that you all had a wonderful half term break. Students have returned back to the academy looking very smart, and I am confident that any remaining concerns will be addressed swiftly on Monday, meaning all students will be in school and attending all lessons with their teachers. For those students that need some additional support with any items of uniform, we have already purchased a supply of items ready for students to borrow. Should you have any further questions about uniform, or our expectations moving forwards, please do not hesitate to get in touch with the school office.

Assemblies this week were delivered by veterans from the Royal British Legion. Our guests talked through the significance of remembrance, and our guest speaker, Paul shared his experiences and impact of those involved in conflict to protect our country and values. All students will participate in our remembrance service on Monday next week. Students who are part of organisations with a uniform who are involved in remembrance services are allowed to wear their uniform to school on Monday.

Before the half term Mr Smart conducted a quick survey to parents of students in year 11 to see how we can improve the arrangements for parents evenings this year. We received some excellent feedback from parents that will impact all future parents’ evenings. We will continue to liaise with our community on how we can continue to improve the academy moving forwards. One instant fix that we are going to make is the time which appointments are released to parents. We appreciate that many parents are not able to book appointments during the day when times are typically released. We will make sure the appointment times are released later in the day so that all parents have equal opportunity at booking times. More details will follow on this.

Year 11 students are busy preparing for their mock exams which start fully next week. I was privileged to see some amazing work in the Art mock exam on Thursday. It is amazing to see how much talent we have at Rushden Academy, and I look forward to being able to share examples of their work later in the academic year. It is important to remind students that mock exams are all conducted under strict rules set by the government. This means that in the unlikely event that s student is unable to complete their exams in the summer, we are able to supply the exam boards with their mock exam papers and results for consideration. All students in year 11 were briefed by myself in a special assembly that I hosted on Tuesday this week.

Finally, we have been asked by the local authority to share the following information with you from the UKHSA who have put together a helpful summary on reducing the spread of winter illness/stomach bugs following the half term break. The information can be found at:

I wish you all a lovely weekend and I look forward to sharing further updates with you next week.

Yours faithfully,

Mr J Firth
