Well Being

At Rushden Academy, we are committed to support all students both academically and with their emotional health and well-being.

The government have set out in their green paper Transforming Young People’s Mental Health Provision (2017) that all schools and colleges should have a named designated lead for mental health by 2020. Our lead for mental health is Mrs C Ogilvie, who is also our Lead DSL (Designated Safeguarding Lead).

We take the mental health of our students seriously and acknowledge the important role we play by promoting and modelling good emotional well-being across the whole school – this is at the centre of what we do.

We are keen to identify early signs of distress and offer appropriate support via our Directors of Key Stage or bespoke provision (HUB) to meet the needs of our individual students to enable them to feel as settled as possible and to reach their potential through often difficult times.

Across the School

We offer a number of bespoke services within school to help build resilience and provide coping strategies for those who do struggle with their mental health. We have an excellent reporting system and staff are vigilant when responding to concerns or worries raised by students, and sometimes parents about their children.

If you are concerned about the mental health or general well-being of a student then please contact Mrs C Ogilvie to discuss.

Our Ethos Team has released a parent podcast for all things parenting and the first episode is up now! Each episode will involve different experts talking about the major issues facing young people today, and asking how we as parents can talk to our teens about them. This week's episode is all about how to talk to your teen about well-being and mental health. Hear from our very own youth work Rosie and others on how to support well-being in young people. https://www.grace-foundation.org.uk/meetup/ethos-asks-episode-1/

Behaviour

Behaviour and Rewards

At Rushden Academy our #TeamRushden STARR Values underpin all that we do.

Student Values

Pupils are rewarded for displaying positive learning behaviours both in class and around the Academy.  There are weekly Stars of the Week awards recognising excellent work and effort from all staff.

Departments also provide further recognition of pupil progress and achievement at the end of ecah half term in our Rewards Assemblies.

Every September, the Academy hosts their Annual Academy Awards Evening where we celebrate our pupil’s achievements and successes with parents.

When pupil behaviour falls below our expectations the Academy uses a simple and easily understood behaviour management system of ASK – MOVE - REMOVE to ensure that pupil learning and progress always comes first.

Behaviour

To further support or values and expectations the Academy has also set out a range of our key foundations such as being in uniform, having a planner and equipment, pupils being punctual to lessons and ready to learn. These key foundations we consider as ‘Non-Negotiables’.

Our current Behaviour and Exclusion Policy can be found here
