Safeguarding at Rushden Academy

Rushden Academy is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

This means that we have a Child Protection Policy and procedures in place which we refer to in our prospectus. All staff (including volunteers and governors) must ensure that they are aware of these procedures. Parents and carers are welcome to read the policy and other related policies to be found in the statutory information section.

Sometimes we may need to share information and work in partnership with other agencies when there are concerns about a child’s welfare. This includes receiving Domestic Violence (DV) and missing from home notification from the Police. We will ensure that our concerns about our students are discussed with his/her parents/carers first unless we have reason to believe that such a move would be contrary to the child’s welfare.

At Rushden Academy, we aim to provide a positive, aspirational learning environment to support all our students in improving their life chances. In order to achieve this we need to work in partnership with parents, students, governors, Tove Learning Trust and carefully selected outside agencies.

For the purposes of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) we are the Data Controller and any personal data we hold is used to support teaching and learning, monitor and report on your child’s progress, provide appropriate pastoral care and assess how well your child is doing.

Due to GDPR, schools must provide parents with an opportunity to opt in or out of any data sharing. We will not give information about you to anyone outside the school without your consent unless the law or our rules permit it. However we are required by law to pass some of your information to the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF). We also subscribe to several systems and services that we see as necessary to assist with the education of your child, a list of these can be viewed on our website.

Once your child is aged 13 or over we are required to pass on certain information to the Careers Service. This is the Government’s information and advice service for all young people ages 13-19 in England. We must provide both yours and your child’s name and address and any further information relevant to the careers services’ role.

What information is collected and why?

We collect emergency contact information including names, addresses, mobile numbers and email addresses from you. In order to be more environmentally-friendly, we communicate school information via email, SMS text messaging and via a web portal.

We collect ethnicity information, special educational needs, meal preference and travel arrangements for use in the Government Census.

We collect medical information and food allergy information in order to provide appropriate care within school.

As part of our catering system, we use student biometric data in the form of a fingerprint, consent for this system is requested via a separate form.

We regularly collect Target and Assessment data in order to assess progress and identify additional areas of development that may be needed.

Some parts of our campus maybe monitored by CCTV. These areas are clearly marked by suitable signage. We use any video recorded to protect our pupils, staff and visitors while they are on site, to deter crime, and to help maintain good order within the School grounds. We retain this information for a period of up to three months. Access to CCTV footage is controlled. CCTV footage may be passed onto the Police or other relevant authorities.

How is data collected?

We ask for Data Sheets and Consent Forms to be completed by parents. We can also receive electronic data transfers from previous or primary schools via the DfE’s Secure Access site providing previous attendance history and KS2/Target data, etc.

Staff complete digital marksheets to provide progress and assessment data, which is then reported to parents via our progress systems.

How will the information be used?

We take your privacy seriously and data is only used to provide the best possible care and education for your child. It is used to assess learning, to set up user accounts to assist with personalised learning, to facilitate home-school communication and emergency information so we can contact parents.

Who will it be shared with?

Any third party that we share your data with has been rigorously checked by following our Due Diligence process. Currently we share information with the companies listed below.

Ofsted Reports

Dear Parents and Carers,

Rushden Academy was inspected by Ofsted on 13th and 14th September 2022 and was judge 'Good' in all areas.

Highlights of the report include:

  • "There are strong positive relationships between staff and pupils at this school."
  • "There is a clear focus on developing pupils as individuals as well as educating them. As one parent put it, ‘Teachers are focused on getting the best out of pupils.’"
  • "Pupils said bullying does not happen often and when it does adults deal with it effectively. Pupils are confident in reporting poor behaviour, such as bullying."
  • "Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) are supported well in lessons."
  • "Students in the sixth form undertake a comprehensive programme of study. There is a broad approach to preparing them for their next steps."

Library

About the Library at Rushden Academy

The Library at Rushden Academy promotes books and reading across the school, along with offering a place to go at break and lunch-time and taking part in extra-curricular activities.

The Library is open to students from 8.15am so that they can return or borrow a book or print off their homework before school starts. We often have lessons booked into the Library for students to use the computer or book resources to help them with their studies. We also help to support Year 7 and 8 classes who are taking part in the Accelerated Reader (AR) program by helping students to find books they will enjoy to read and supporting teachers with delivery of the programme. Year 9 students also have a fornightly Library lesson, to concentrate on reading and the importance of developing literacy skills. Students from Year 7 all the way up to Year 13 are welcome to come in, browse the shelves and borrow a book. Students can borrow two books for up to two weeks (please refer to the 'Overdues Guidance 2025' attached to this webpage for information concerning late books). At break and lunch times the Library is open for students who would like catch-up on homework, read quietly, ask staff about reading books or, at lunch-time, take part in one of the daily activities.

We have a small selection of stationery items for sale including pens, pencils and rulers; full list is attached to this webpage. Please note this is a cash only service.

Reading and Activities

There are thousands of book titles students can choose from and staff are on hand to give advice and support students with the choosing of those books. Every break and lunch-time students are welcome to find a quiet nook in the Library and spend some time reading.

New books are added to the stock frequently and the titles are chosen with our students in mind; what they like or do not like, popular authors and series of books. We sometimes get recommendations from our students, which is a fantastic way of making sure that the books we buy are going to be popular with lots of students. We ensure that we have a wide and diverse collection of titles covering many non-fiction topics. There are varied genres to choose from in the fiction section, which includes humour, crime, horror, fantasy and real-life, along with many more. Some of our books have more grown-up themes and language which is why our Year 7 and 8 students must have a permission slip, signed by parents or carers, before they can take these books home. Students can get the slips from the Library staff.

To support our members of staff the Library also has a ‘Teaching and Learning’ area, with many helpful books to choose from. Staff are also welcome to browse our fiction shelves.

The Library has a team of Student Library Assistants who help the staff out at break and lunch-times. This team were mindfully chosen, knowing that they have a love of reading and are able to promote different books and use of the Library to their fellow students.

There are many book-themed events which the Library run, such as:

  • Christmas Cracker
  • World Book Day
  • Harry Potter Book Night
  • Carnegie Medal Book Shadowing
  • Author visits or reading events

Any events will be advertised around the school and students can ask for more information in the Library.
