As our year 9 students move into their three year GCSE we aim to develop and extend their knowledge and understanding of specified key events, periods and societies in local, British, and wider world history. We consider the wide diversity of human experience, engage in historical enquiry to develop as independent learners and as critical and reflective thinkers. Students develop the ability to ask relevant questions about the past, to investigate issues critically and to make valid historical claims by using a range of sources in their historical context. Students will explore two of the new five course elements in year nine starting with a British thematic study: Medicine in Britain, c1250–present and moving onto the Historic Environment element: The British sector of the Western Front, 1914–18: surgery and treatment. In year 10 students then embark on the study of Anglo Saxon England and the American West before going onto study Nazi Germany in year 11. The content is examined in three exams at the end of year 11. Students will be prepared for further academic study with a vast range of historical knowledge, as well as skills in the use of evidence, extended writing and developing judgements that are transferable to a range of other subjects.
