Students opt into the study of GCSE Geography during Year 9 starting their three year course. The new GCSE course has been selected to allow students to embark on a wide breadth of areas of study whilst also promoting the use of field work and the study of methodology when investigating using geographical techniques. Equal weighting in the exams is given to Physical and Human topics, some of which have already been introduced lower down the school. New topics for the study at GCSE include the geography of resource management including the provision of energy for the modern world, the changing economic world and the urban challenges of the new global world. Students will sit three exams in the summer of year 11, but will focus on exam technique and be assessed using GCSE criteria throughout the entirety of the course. Students will be given at least two opportunities to practise fieldwork in the real world and knowledge of these techniques is examined in the third paper. The course is heavily focused on developing knowledgable and responsible young citizens of the modern world we live in and the course opens up a wide range of opportunities for students to go onto further study in Geography or take away transferable skills to other areas of study.
