Throughout the GCSE Product Design course we study a wide range of different outcomes and projects.  In Year 10 the focus is on developing skills and understanding the materials, construction methods and to understand how these concepts and ideas are communicated.  Students learn the history of design as part of the course and this is integral for all students.  Towards the end of Year 10, students are given a theme for coursework (worth 60% of the final GCSE grade) which is set by the exam board and a significant amount of time is put in to producing the work.  At the end of the course all GCSE Product Design students then have to sit a 2 hour written exam (worth 40% of the GCSE grade) which examines theory skills and knowledge gained throughout the course.

Supporting your Child

Homework is required regularly and is often set to ensure that students develop their research, creativity and widen their knowledge on a particular designer, style or movement and becomes crucial when students are working on GCSE coursework.

In Year 10 and 11 this often involves summarising findings from elements within their coursework or project work.  Students are welcome to use the workshop and CAD CAM facilities with key stage four with prior arrangement from their teachers and this support is welcomed as it will enhance their practical skills and development.
