On Tuesday, some of our year 12 history cohort travelled to the prestigious Emmanuel Centre in Westminster, London, to attend a series of lectures relating to "Russia and Revolution". This relates to a key module in their A level studies and was an informative event that allowed them to hear from these experts in their field:

Dr Daniel Beer, Royal Holloway, University of London: The Collapse of the Romanov Dynasty: The Russian Empire in the Reign of Nicholas II

Professor Robert Service, University of Oxford: Revolution, civil war and the rise of communism

Dr Catherine Merridale, Institute of Historical Research: Vladimir Lenin, Shaper of the Revolution

Dr Simon Huxtable, Goldsmiths, University of London: Utopia Postponed: Why Nikita Khrushchev Didn’t Build Communism

Dr Martin McCauley, University College London: Stalin: his dictatorship and legacy

Further to this the students had the opportunity to hear from Dr Robin Bunce, who gave invaluable advice on how to structure exam answers and how to avoid making common mistakes. Dr Bunce is especially relevant as he is the person who wrote the textbook we use as a foundation of the course!

The students behaved impeccably and were a credit to TENC. They were all able to make useful notes and were full of praise for the event, and I have included some of their feedback below.

"Really good"

"Good contextual knowledge – really brought it to life"

"To the point – good to hear from experts"

"Dr Huxtable was very applicable to the exams"

Because of the fantastic behaviour and attitude displayed by our students - and as the event was so beneficial - we will look to attend events such as this again when they arise. Thank you to the students and to Mrs Bowers for making the day run so smoothly - despite London traffic making the return journey 4-hours-long!
