It is really important that our pupils get to see what life is like beyond Rushden Academy so this week we took our further maths students to Cambridge University for a maths challenge, our history students to Westminster for a history in action lecture on Russia and the media students went to the British Film Institute in London. All trips were successful and staff and students alike benefitted from their experiences.

Also this week our health and social care students helped to deliver a special Christmas dinner to some of our local elderly people in the community. Working with Serve we were able to reach out and provide an entertaining afternoon with food, bingo, a quiz and entertainment from the Rushden school choir. We managed to get everyone into the Christmas spirit and it was lovely seeing the different generations together.

This week Santa and his little elves went fundraising in Stanwick. Thank you to the many people who turned up to help, it is a lovely tradition and one that the local community enjoy participating in. One lady saves her copper coins all year to donate to charity.

Today we will be wearing our Christmas jumpers and contributing to Save the Children and pupils will be enjoying a Christmas dinner today too. Next week we will be welcoming many of our local primary schools to Rushden Academy to see this year’s pantomime, Knight Fever. Please be aware that tickets are selling fast for the panto performance on Thursday 19th December with doors opening at 7:20pm for parents and pupils.

Finally, well done to Year 11 who have conducted themselves perfectly over the mock exam period. It has been good to see them using revision resources to do the best they can. Year 10 will also be having a taste of the ‘real’ GCSE experience in the next few days too. It is important that pupils reflect on their experience, complete their corrections, continue to revise well and seek support from their teachers. Parents evening for Year 11 is on 30th January 2020.

A final reminder that we all return to school on 6th January 2020. The new ‘snack shack’ will be in place and the almost million pound roofing and window project will be nearly complete. The youth worker, family liaison and ethos leaders will be in place and 2020 for Rushden Academy looks very exciting!

In the meantime, may I wish everyone a happy Christmas and we will look forward to welcoming the team back and working together in the new year.

Jane Burton
