Good afternoon

Today year 11 had their exam prep talk to launch the full exam period, it was made clear what support was available during the exam period. Students can buy toast as a quick breakfast in the morning to prepare for the day ahead and get a free bottle of water all for 30p. We reminded pupils of the equipment requirements in preparation for their exams especially the use of their own calculator, one that they are familiar with the functions of and can use.

Also happening today is the Learning for Life day, Year 11 are exam focused but other year groups are covering a range of learning activities for instance first aid, personal hygiene, friendship, working cooperatively, rights and responsibilities, behaviours at work, wage structures and study skills - just to name a few.

The PTFA met this week, they will be supporting EAL pupils by helping to purchase a translation tool that will provide accessible material not only for pupils but for parents when they attend school functions. This will be invaluable and will have a positive impact upon our growing community, so thank you to the PTFA for your continued help and support.

I reminded pupils this week in assembly of the need to look after each other, the environment and the planet and I talked about heroes in society as well as heroes at Rushden Academy. Some of our pupils do amazing things to care for families and some support rescued animals. Some of our pupils give up their ‘free’ time to help in the community by volunteering and making the world a better place. They don’t think of themselves and they often do things very quietly without drawing attention to the wonderful things they do. So I just wanted to say thank you to those of you that just keep giving.

This week I also met with members of the student council who always inform me of what is going well and what needs to improve. They are proud of their school, they do feel listened to and they do see things happening as a result of their feedback. We are a team and we all have the same goal to make this the best school it can be for our students and the community of Rushden!

On an academic footing we would also like to share our thoughts on the exam coursework that our students have completed and our impression of the GCSE practical exams that many Year 11 students have completed already. Year 13 coursework looks very strong which is testament to their hard work and commitment, but equally to the support they have been given by our staff. So a big well done to both staff and students for working so hard to make this happen. The Year 11’s also need to be congratulated on their strong start to Dance, Drama, Photography and Art GCSE exams. It is all looking very promising. We would also like to thank the Y11 photography pupils as their high quality work has been used to enhance our learning environment in the creative arts department, if you get a chance to pop in some time please let us show you how fantastic it is looking. Watch out for the transformations across school, we are really excited that our plans are coming to fruition.

We are looking forward to greeting Year 10 parents next Thursday between 4pm to 7pm and sharing data and discussing how things are going in preparation for their GCSEs. In 5 weeks, on the 14th June we will saying our goodbyes to Year 11 collectively. So in no time at all our current Year 10 will be in this exact same position as Year 11 are now. So for Year 10’s it is good that many are already attending period 6 revision sessions, they also need to keep chipping away and making revision cards because Year 11 is fast approaching.

Hopefully the school field will be open next week for our pupils in Year 7 to Year 10, this will give Year 11 some extra space to think and prepare! Thank you for reading and do have a good weekend.
