Good afternoon

I just want to say a massive thank you to the parents who continue to support the school and say such positive things about the academy in the community. The pupils and staff deserve to get a good press, the teachers go above and beyond to support our pupils, this was very evident throughout the Easter break and I am very proud of our pupils, how they conduct themselves here at Rushden Academy and on every trip they go on. We have absolutely nothing to hide and the door is always open for you to visit and see first-hand what is happening within our academy. We need to shake off myths and any negatives of the past because it is so unfair. Never have any doubts, I urge you to contact us and come in for a coffee and have a look around.

I am really pleased to say that we continue to be fully staffed and actually have a waiting list for teachers who want to join us, word of mouth is powerful and it is a great place to work. As you may know I am in the fortunate position of visiting other schools from time to time, and I can whole heartedly say that the grass is not greener on the other side. What we have is a caring, small community school, it is good to go and ‘see’ other schools but to return to Rushden Academy is like coming home, seeing a sea of happy faces who are determined to be the best they can be.

Upon my return I was overwhelmed after receiving information regarding the year 11, comments about their stunning performances in GCSE drama, the progress being made in Art and Photography and the effort they are putting in to gain the best grades they can. We are in the process of putting together the final touches for the wrap-around interventions for their GCSEs. Year 11 will not leave school until the 14th June, which is the last exam for most but not all. Therefore we are making sure that they receive the best support and help possible right to the end.

Some of the year 9 pupils have been out this week at Rutland Waters, they have been working on many different skills including problem solving, design and team work. Again nothing but praise on how they conducted themselves so I would like to thank you as parents/carers as once again they did us proud! Mr Harris will no doubt share photos with us soon.

Later in the bulletin you will find our proposal to amend the school day slightly, the reasons are shared and the changes are minimal but we believe that they will help us gain more quality teaching time. Please have a read and if you have any thoughts please do get in touch.

On Thursday I had a really interesting meeting with a consultant who is working on behalf of Crown Estates, they are responsible for the Rushden Lakes project. They discussed the plans for the next phase of Rushden Lakes, the 55 acre site from Ditchfield Road to the new cinema. They are very keen to talk to our pupils, to share the plan and to listen and take on board ideas to help steer thoughts for the next phase. In the first instance we will invite our student council to meet and discuss this, but would like to have a wider student voice. Perhaps over dinner you could consider what would be good for the area and community. They want to expand and enhance the range of opportunities and benefits available for people in this area whilst protecting and enhancing the natural environment for the benefit of local communities and future generations. Ideas that were mentioned were the possibility of a skate parks, an outdoor gym, connecting local areas by foot, bike and kayak  paths. They talk about investing £500 million over the 10 years. It is a fantastic opportunity for Rushden pupils to influence the thoughts of the planners and make a difference in their area. All ideas welcome and should be passed to student services who will ensue they reach the student council. I envisage them re-visiting the academy in a couple of weeks but will keep you posted.

Have a good bank holiday and y11 and y13 good luck with your revision!
