A productive half term with lots taking place and many plans in the pipeline. I think staff and pupils are ready for this break, but I am also completely aware that many will continue to work throughout, thank you. But do find time to re-charge as we come back to another busy half-term.

Year 11

Teachers have been working on AP1 improvements with pupils and checking for progress. Once this data is generated on 3/11, teachers will be providing 2 specific areas that pupils need to improve. This will be shared with parents so that you are aware of the next steps. We have also ordered the revision guides.

We had to make some tough decisions last week regarding languages and Y11. Many of our pupils are studying 10 GCSEs, but the one that gave us the biggest concern was Spanish, we failed to recruit a teacher, historic results were not good and the recent changes to GCSEs, especially in languages, make the courses much harder. Mrs Brainwood eluded to the fact they were verging on A-level content. So without a teacher, we had to take immediate action. The decision was made to offer a level 2 course in Business (appropriate to local needs) and Health and Fitness (the schools top results have been achieved in this area). We put things in motion and have had one week to listen and make changes before we broke up. So far we have swapped some pupils across from one course to the other, allowed some pupils to work independently and sharpen their 9 other GCSEs and we have secured someone to deliver Spanish twilight sessions for those that could and want to still grade in Spanish. It was so important that we had the chance to discuss this with you, so that we can make the best decisions for our pupils in the worst case situation. Moving forward we will continue to offer German and French, but it has to be the right decision based on each pupils needs. I am very conscious that, from a school perspective, the best 8 level 2 courses (GCSE or vocational) are what counts for the DFE measures, but it also must be what is right for our pupils on an individual basis. I am really keen to review our curriculum offer, there are some fantastic courses now available that will lead to better outcomes for our pupils. Next half term I will be seeking your views further. Our aim is to have higher quality GCSE/L2 results and develop greater enjoyment in learning so our pupils can move onto good courses post -16.

Year 6 into 7

We had a wonderful open evening this half term. I gave an open invite to our prospective parents to make appointments to see what our school was like day in, day out. Many year 6 parents have taken up this offer. They have been able to experience first-hand the daily life of the school. I have had the pleasure of taking parents absolutely everywhere in the school and into most lessons. It was also vital that they gathered a real sense of what it was like during lesson changeover and break time. I wanted to ensure that the school that was described during our Open Evening was the school that exists Monday to Friday. The parent feedback was excellent, they commented that staff and pupils were happy and extremely polite, that pupil uniform was smart, that they saw pupils working hard in lessons and that the atmosphere was calm. Parents really liked the school. Many commented that they had not expected it to be so good especially after what they had heard. If you do have any doubt in what I say, please do come and see it for yourself, it’s only right for the staff and pupils that work really hard here to have the opportunity to shine.

Once again thank you for reading and do enjoy time as a family over half term.
