Key stage 4 starts in year 9 in our academy. This allows us to deliver the specified content in a way that we can consolidate understanding before moving forwards.

We have two courses that we run currently;

GCSE AQA Trilogy. This is a course that gives students two GCSE’s on the new 1-9 scale.  Often called Core Science, as this is the course that all our students will complete unless they have been selected for Separate (Triple) GCSE sciences.GCSE AQA Separate (Triple) Science. This is a course that gives students three GCSE’s on the new 1-9 scale.  Often called triple, this contains the same content as Trilogy, but there is a further third Biology, Chemistry and Physics to cover.  This is a very challenging and demanding course, and only a handful of students are allowed to choose this as an option.

Further information for the courses can be found here on the AQA website http://www.aqa.org.uk/subjects/science/gcse

Revision, homework and hardwork are essentials for success in this course due to ther larger amount of content they now have since coursework elements have been withdrawn from all science courses.

Experiments and Practicals

The way practical skills are assessed has changed. Students are not assessed by ISAs anymore. Instead, they do a series of required practical activities. Then the exams at the end of the course will assess their practical skills.

Supporting your Child

Science is about the confidence to try and fail, about making a decision or prediction based on an idea. Support us by helping to instil in your child that the only thing that ever matters in a science lesson is that the effort is more important than the amount of things you can get right.

Students will be supported with revision materials when they are needed, and the homework’s that are set.

Please support us by talking to your child about what they did in science this week, allow them to spread their understandings and grow their confidence.
