During KS3 lessons, students are introduced to a broad range of musical styles and genres and learn these through practical application. A range of instruments are used throughout KS3 from keyboard and percussion, to ukuleles, drums and guitars; all allowing student to get a real feel for music. KS3 music starts at the basics to allow all students to access music whether experienced or not. In Year 7 we explore all elements of music this includes how these elements are presented. Students then go on to write and perform their own music, both in groups and independently, performing popular pieces in bands and exploring new genres. Year 8 sees us explore hip hop and rap, film music and blues to name a few; students explore composing and performing pieces from these genres and the techniques that work well in all.

Supporting your Child

Encourage your son/daughter to practise their instrument on a regular basis

Perform with other young musicians. Groups such as the Northamptonshire county ensembles and Saturday music schools are ideal.

Encourage your son/daughter to attend concerts to listen to live music.

Listen to a wide range of music

Provide practise opportunities for keyboard work – access to a keyboard or piano is ideal, but keyboard apps for smartphones and tablets are also suitable.

Take your son/ daughter to listen to live music whenever possible.

Encourage your son/ daughter to support the college productions or attend local performances in the area.

Support your son/daughter if they want to learn to play an instrument. There are many ways of learning from internet tuition to school lessons.
