Art, Design and Technology

Following on from the work undertaken in Year 7, students in Year 8 study a wide range of different artists, art movements and create a wide variety of  outcomes to challenge individuals for each project throughout the year.  Students start the year looking at the exciting work of Antonio Gaudi producing innovative three dimensional outcomes, we then look at portraiture and the work of Pablo Picasso and the final project of the year is a perspective and technical drawing.

Design and Technology

Students study a wide range of different designers and techniques which come under the umbrella of Design and Technology. Throughout the keystage, students work in Textiles, Resistant Materials, CAD CAM, Food technology and Graphical Products. Each project has a strong theme with a cultural link or designer. Students work through the design process to produce elements of the design cycle which helps them produce a final outcome. The final outcome is very different according to the area of Design and Technology studied. These can range from a food practical outcome, a resistant materials outcome from wood, textile fabric outcome or a 2D graphical product.

Throughout keystage three we run many competitions, clubs and opportunities for extended learning which are publicised through tutors or the school website. Recent awards have been won over the past few years from safety near water ‘Save a Lifebelt competition’ through to designing and racing ‘go carts’ with ‘soapbox derby’.

Supporting your Child

Homework is required regularly and is often set to ensure that students develop their research, creativity and widen their knowledge on a particular designer, style or movement and becomes crucial when students are working on GCSE coursework.

In Year 10 and 11 this often involves summarising findings from elements within their coursework or project work.  Students are welcome to use the workshop and CAD CAM facilities with key stage four with prior arrangement from their teachers and this support is welcomed as it will enhance their practical skills and development.
