This week our Year 12 students have been out and about on work experience placements. Placements include teaching at local schools, a pharmacist, transport logistics and one student has even flown out to Milan to look at IT systems.

The week is designed to encourage our students to think about their future plans and aspirations. The week takes into account recent DFE guidelines which recommend that all students undertake work experience or some form of work-related training as part of their sixth form experience.

Relevant work experience was rated by 66% of recruiting employers as being a critical or significant factor looked for in candidates (UKCES Employer Perspectives Survey)

31% of young people starting their working lives do not feel they have the appropriate skills, citing a lack of work experience (71%) as being their main weakness (CBI/Pearson Education and Skills Survey)

A couple of students have chosen to do their work experience around the academy. Mendeie has been working on a 1:1 basis with students in the Curriculum Access Provision as well as shadowing the Behaviour Team and is enjoying the experience. Over in the Science department both Ryan Hart and James Walding have been helping with the preparation of experiments for Years 7 to 10. Ryan said ‘Its been great fun and I have loved experimenting myself, my favourite is definitely the extra-large magnet, iron powder and engine oil. I would love to come back and help when I don’t have lessons myself, the whole experience has given me other options to think about when I leave school’.
