Rushden Academy – Whole school assembly of Remembrance

This Friday our Academy held its annual whole school assembly of Remembrance.  It was a moment for Team Rushden to reflect and show their respects to all the men and women who have sacrificed their lives in conflicts around the world both past and present.  The assembly was led by our Principal, Jane Burton.  In her address she was able to add further poignancy to the occasion by saying that on this day 100 years ago marks the day that the Third Battle of Ypres, more commonly known as Passchendaele came to an end.  A battle that had raged for over 3 months had cost over 275,000 allied soldiers lives at an average of 2,100 lives lost per day.  To provide some understanding of this the figure, Mrs Burton explained that this was close to three times the number of students and adults in attendance at the Remembrance Assembly.  Our students were able to make a huge contribution to the event both in terms of the reverence they showed and in contributing to the readings.  Two year 7 students read ‘In Flanders Fields’ having leant the poem off by heart, followed by the Head and Deputy Head Boy who read ‘For the Fallen’.  It was a moment when as Team Rushden we can say ‘Let us remember them.’

Assemblies this week

Assemblies this week were led by a guest speak Mrs L Baker from the British Legion which led to our whole school assembly of Remembrance this Friday.  Mrs Baker spoke of a local hero.  Bernard William Vann who was born and spent his childhood in Rushden.  Our students learnt of his heroic actions throughout the war, having joined up at the very beginning of the war and seeing action throughout.  He became one of the most decorated soldiers of the First World War.  The poignancy of the story of this remarkable man was that he was killed just 5 weeks before the war ended.  He was awarded a Victoria Cross posthumously following the bravery he had shown as an officer leading his men just weeks earlier.  To celebrate this highly decorated hero Rushden will be awarded Bernard Vann VC a commemorative paving stone which will be placed at the towns memorial on the 29th September 2018 exactly 100 hundred years to the day of his immense show of bravery.  Recently, Rushden Lakes have also commemorated Bernard Vann by naming a viewing point after him.  The legacy left by this local hero will we hope be an inspiration to everyone.
