A number of participating schools in Northamptonshire have been working towards tackling mental health stigma within educational settings, as part of this, our PSHE focus for last term involved an intense whole school approach to learning more about mental health and well-being. We looked at what good mental health is and how to maintain this,  as well as providing students with an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of common mental health illnesses and how best to support people through such challenges.

''Talking about mental health so openly has been such an eye opener, we had great discussions in our tutor groups and it felt safe to talk about some of this issues that are often seen as a bit taboo'' Year 10 student

In addition to the learning in the classroom, our town mayor, Cllr Kaye Rawlins, alongside representatives from each tutor group, participated in the Mental Health Awareness Day balloon launch event to show our commitment to promote health and well-being in our school and challenge the stigma associated with mental health.

’I am so pleased to hear about all the good work at Rushden Academy around understanding mental health and mental health conditions. Children and young people need to be aware of the difficulties that people of all ages face and treat people who struggle with these often debilitating conditions with fairness and respect’’ Cllr Rawlins

We were also delighted to have our good work recognised in the form of a gold standard accreditation from the Northamptonshire Mental Health Stigma Programme with the award  presented at Northampton Saints on Saturday 13th February.

Harry Bond, Oliver Baker and Imogen Kitchen represented our school at The Saints match and were treated to a home win.
