A fascinating insight into the life of former student Ethan Johnston who was part of TEAM Rushden and has gone on to become a professional footballer at Northampton Town. As a department we thank Ethan for his time and effort in speaking to us and will continue to follow his journey.

When did you start playing football? Who did you play for etc.

I have always loved football, I have played it ever since I have been able to walk!!! I was scouted at 5 years old and went onto play at Rushden and Diamonds Academy, I've played for many clubs growing up and had many unsuccessful trials at professional clubs.

How did you find PE within school?

PE lessons were definitely the best part of School as I love all sports and it was great being able to do sports with my mates.

Who did you look up to as a role model when in school?

Someone who I aspired to be like and who I always looked up to was Fernando Torres when he was at Liverpool.

What did you do after leaving Rushden Academy?

After leaving School I wasn't ready to give up on my dream of becoming a professional footballer and I joined the Northampton Town Football and education programme. I highly recommend this programme to aspiring young footballers. I signed my professional football contract for Northampton Town Football Club in February of this year and made my professional debut on Wednesday in the Second round of Carabao Cup against Bristol City.

What did it feel like to make your professional debut?

It was absolutely surreal and such an amazing experience, especially at such a big stadium against such a great team.

What is the long term aim within football?

My long term aim is to make a career in the professional game definitely, I want to play football for a living as long as I can.

If you had one message to students that want to succeed in sport what would it be?

Any students that want to succeed in sport, my advice to you would be, NEVER GIVE UP! even if you get rejected or don't get the news you'd like, never give up as you will always get opportunities. Attitude is really important too, you need to have the right attitude to help you get where you want to be.
