Firstly I have some very good news, the school is no longer in Special Measures. We are on the up and we will collectively continue to drive up standards. Just to put into perspective how busy this exam period has been Mrs Chambers shared these figures this week… Since May 14th our students have sat 3184 ‘real’ exams and 1693 mock papers (Yrs 9, 10 and 12) making a total of 4877 exam papers! I think Mrs Chambers, her team of invigilators, Mr Bocking, Heads of Year, the whole pastoral team, Mrs Lowe (our reprographics lead) all of our y9,10, 11 & 12 pupils, the teachers marking the papers, in fact let’s just say the whole of Team Rushden need to be congratulated on a their magnificent performance during the exam period.

This week I would like to share comments from some of our teachers….

“The Art & Design department did their best this week to keep 117 Yr10 students cool during their 4 hour mock exam. Mrs Peel wishes to say a massive congratulations to all of the students stating that they have done a magnificent job in their exams. ADT have been amazed by their students’ creativity and focus in the mock exams and cannot wait to get marking them.” (Mrs Peel – ADT)

“MFL have been conducting Yr10 speaking exams this week and have been very pleased with how the students have done. There is still a long way to go and lots to do but a very good starting point from which to build. We are also excited to be advertising 2 trips to students – a day trip to France and a residential trip to Germany – more information to follow early next week for those students who are invited on the trip.” (Mrs Brainwood – Director of Learning)

“Science are busy organising exciting opportunities for next year including Operating Theatre live for selected students in Yr9-13, a visit to Peterborough Cathedral for the Soyuz Capsule experience for selected Yr9 and a visit from the Science Museum for students in Yr8 and Yr9. The Science Team would also like to thank the students who have over the last 2 weeks completed a science survey to voice their experiences and opinions of science and suggest how we can support them even more over the coming years.” (Miss Wiles – Science)

“Yr7 and Yr9 are studying the works of Shakespeare for their final unit this year. There have been some excellent adaptations of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and ‘Romeo and Juliet’ over the years: your child might enjoy watching a film version with you, or, better yet, seeing a production over the summer holidays. Meanwhile, Yr10 are gearing up for their final assessment this year – the ‘Spoken Language endorsement’ in which they are required to give a speech. Practising giving a speech in front of the family may be a good way to help your child gain confidence for this topic.” (Miss Green – English)

“Fantastic start to the 6th form induction week with a trip to Kent Uni in Canterbury. Also Yr12 have been to a UCAS conference and a visit to Nottingham Uni. Yr13 have a Leavers Assembly today – we wish them all the best and hope that they thoroughly enjoy their Leavers Ball in the evening! Finally well done to performing arts and our sixth form students winning 2 awards for their Theatre in Education.” (Sixth form)

“Any Yr7 and Yr8s that had 100% attendance last half term enjoyed our FUN ON THE FIELD event last Friday and Yr9 and Yr10 will be enjoying it this Friday! All year groups are also looking forward to a number of events next week! We have our Learning for Life Day on Weds and then Sports Day on Thursday! Yr 7 will be looking at British Values and need to remember to bring in their picture that represents “What it means to be British” to them. Some Yr7s have formed part of the Transition Team and were fantastic helping out at the Parents Information Evening for Yr6s last week. They are also looking forward to welcoming in the current Yr6s in for their first transition day on Friday!” (Mrs Finney – Pastoral Lead)

I am really pleased to welcome so many new year 6’s and their families to Rushden Academy and I am very grateful to so many who would like to join the PTFA, this really helps our school to grow and it makes a big difference to our pupils. We are already thinking of potential projects and how we can reach out and help the community. I am also very excited about the transformation already happening in the history stairwell, when you visit you will see exactly what I mean. Have a lovely weekend.
