In September we promised to transform this Academy into a consistently good school that the children and young people of the town have a right to. Week by week we log that journey, here are some of the highlights:

Term 1

Week 1 – established Team Rushden values, ethos and expectations. Introduced lesson Walkabout and began scrutiny of all teaching.

Week 2 – introduced new Behaviour Policy and System. Held Meet the New SLT evening.

Week 3 – set values for zero-tolerance of bullying. Created Core Attendance Team. Established Prefects in all year groups.

Week 4 – finalised the Academy’s Statement of Action in line with OFSTED’s required timeline. This plan has been successfully qualified by OFSTED as ‘Fit for Purpose’ (letter received 31st October 2016).

Week 5 - Held Open Evening, introduced Non-negotiables and Reward Cards.

Week 6 – Began personalised individual mentoring for all Year 11 students through one-to-one meetings (to be rolled out across the Academy). All students signed anti-bullying charter, led by Prefects.

Week 7 - Concluded Performance Management of Teachers. Closed Term 1 having achieved Goal Number 1 of a much more focused Academy with Leaders having authority and positive discipline.

Term 2

Week 8 – Post OFSTED parents consultation was held. Again, brilliant discussion and the honesty, transparency, challenge and commitment to succeed was tangible. Thank you to all who attended, for your fair challenges, very positive feedback and supportive stance. Much appreciated by all who are trying so hard to make this the best school it possibly can be – once and for all. On 31st October we received the excellent notice from OFSTED that our Improvement Plan is passed as Fit for Purpose.

Week 9 – We held a Year 11 Conference focused on Aiming High and how to get there through successful learning and working practices. Remembrance Service brilliantly observed by the entire school. A personal highlight, showing the absolute unity that is possible with Team Rushden. We also restructured our SEND provision to ensure better delivery and communication, led by Mrs Smith now as SENCO, to meet the additional needs of all students as required. Miss Steele duly appointed as Assistant SENCO.

Week 10 – Anti Bullying Week. All House Assemblies focused on the Zero Tolerance message and how we tackle bullying as a unified community. In addition, Prefects visited all tutor groups to deliver the message from a student voice perspective.

Week 11 – Staff, Parent and Student Surveys distributed. We need to know how all Stakeholders think we are performing in order to ensure we build rapidly wherever improvement is needed.

Week 12 – A great Science Coursework Day on Thursday for Year 11 with excellent feedback from Mr Johnson and the team. A very positive Year 7 Parents Evening – thank you to all and in particular to Mr Middleton and Mrs Tudor. A new leaner meeting structure – Extended Leadership Team led by Mrs Burton and Mr Middleton - to ensure smarter and more focused collegiate working at all levels.

Week 13 – Year 11 Mock Exams began. We had a Twelve Hours of Sport day raising £1300 for cancer charities. Y9 completed Options process as we move now to a three year GCSE programme beginning after Year 8.

Week 14 – The term draws towards its close for Christmas on Tuesday 20th December with Celebration Assemblies in every Year Group, Christmas Pantomime for our local primary schools and, for Year 11, more Mock Exams and the second Science Coursework day (they will have earned a rest this Christmas!).

Can I thank all students, staff and parents for their hard work and support. 2016 has been a year of trials for the Academy but in the last two terms we have set the school on course and made great strides forward. We know exactly what needs to be achieved and are determined that this will be a consistently Good school, in all areas, in 2017.

Have a happy, safe and restful Christmas holiday.

Best wishes

Mr M Stenton
